The prestige ships of the British Navy were the three-deckers, carefully and lavishly built by the Royal Dockyards and requiring many years of work. Rarely commissioned in peace-time, and preserved with expensive overhauls and rebuilding, the few First Rates served as flagships, and they were the strongest units of the line of battle, even if they were very difficult to handle. Each 100-gun ship had an established complement of 850 men in addition to extras assigned when used as flagships.

HMS Queen Charlotte, a 1st rate of 100 guns, was in service barely a decade before perishing in an accident off Livorno. Before her destruction, however, she saw service as the flagship of Admiral Earl Howe at the Glorious First of June (1794), the first fleet engagement of the French Revolutionary War. The Queen Charlotte broke through the French line astern of the 120-gun Le Montagne, and subsequently engaged, dismasted and finally secured the surrender of the 80-gun French ship of the line Le Juste. This ship pack can also be used to represent the British first rate ship-of-the-line “HMS Ville de Paris 1795”.

Each 100-gun ship had an established complement of 850 men in addition to extras assigned when used as flagships.

HMS Royal George was ordered under the name “Umpire”, and was built to counter the much enlarged French three-deckers built during the American Revolutionary War. She was renamed in late 1783 for the Royal George lost at Spithead in 1782. HMS Royal George served as the flagship at the Battle of Groix and wore the flag of Admiral Alexander Hood at the Glorious First of June. In 1807 she served as the flagship of Admiral Sir John Duckworth during the Alexandria expedition of 1807. This ship pack can also be used to represent the British first rate ship-of-the-line “HMS Hibernia 1804”.

HMS Royal Sovereign was a 1st rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, the lead ship of the class with the same name; it was the largest warship in the world at the time of her construction. The ship gained a magnificent record of service, notably at the Glorious First of June and at Trafalgar, where she led the Lee column and fired the first British broadsides of the day, simultaneously raking the 112-gun Spanish Santa Ana to port and 74-gun French Le Fougueux to starboard, breaking through the line of Allied vessels. This ship pack can also be used to represent the British first rate ship-of-the-line “HMS Britannia 1762”.

The Swan class was a class of 14-gun ship-sloops (even if in fact they mounted, after 1779, 16 guns). The class was designed for the Royal Navy by the Surveyor of the Navy, John Williams. Twenty-three more were ordered between 1773 and 1779; they represented the 'standard' ship-sloop design of the British Navy during the American Revolutionary War, during which eleven of them were lost. Surviving vessels went on to serve during the French Revolutionary War and Napoleonic War.

Thorn was the former HMS Thorn, a Swan class vessel built at Mistleythorn, and launched February, 17th 1779. HMS Thorn was coppered and pierced for eighteen guns, but mounted only fourteen 6-pounders. She was captured by two American privateers on August, 25th 1779; then, she became an American privateer with a number of successful engagements and prizes to her name, until the British ship Arethusa re-captured her on August, 20th 1782. This ship pack can also be used to represent the American ship-sloop “USS Atalanta 1781”.

The French ship Alligator was originally the HMS Alligator, a British 14-gun sloop launched in 1780. In April 1782 she destroyed a French store ship and captured several forts. On her way back to Britain on June, 26th, she encountered the French 32-gun frigate La Fée, off the Scilly Isles, and was captured. Between 1782-83 she was known as Alligator. In October 1783 she became the packet ship Courrier de New-York. This ship pack can also be used to represent the French ship-sloop “Le Fortune 1780”.

HMS Swan served during the American Revolutionary War, but in 1779 she was converted to an 8-gun fire ship and renamed “Explosion”. In 1783, she was reconverted to sloop, and later sailed to the East Indies, Jamaica and the North Sea, where it captured two privateers. She was laid up at Portsmouth in 1801 and sold for disposal in 1814. This ship pack can also be used to represent the British ship-sloop “HMS Fairy 1778”.

The Océan-class was a series of 16 first-rate 118-gun ships of the line of the French Navy, designed by engineer Jacques-Noël Sané. Along with the 74-gun of the Téméraire type and the 80-gun of the Tonnant type, the Océan 120-gun type was to become one of the three French standard types of battleships during the war period 1793 to 1815. These were the most powerful ships of the Napoleonic Wars, and a total of ten served during that time.

The Impérial was a first-rate 118-gun French ship-of-the-line of the Océan class. Designed by Jacques-Noël Sané, she was launched on 1 October 1803 and completed in February 1804 under the name “Vengeur”. She was renamed to Impérial in March 1805. The Impérial was the French flagship in the Battle of San Domingo on February, 6th 1806. Severely damaged and surrounded by several British ships, she was beached by her captain to prevent her sinking and capture; a few days later the British set fire to the wreck, destroying it. The Orient was an Océan-class 118-gun French ship-of-the-line. Flagship of the rear-admiral Martin during the Battle of Genoa in 1795, she is mostly famous for its role as flagship of the French squadron during the Invasion of Egypt. During the Battle of the Nile, on August, 1st 1798 – the celebrated victory that made Lord Nelson a hero – the Orient came under fire from five enemy ships; the ammunition storage caught fire and the ship detonated. Her spectacular destruction that day is commemorated by paintings and poems. This ship pack can also be used to represent the French ship-of-the-line “Austerlitz 1808”.

The Hébé class was a class of six 40-gun frigates of the French Navy, designed in 1781 by Jacques-Noël Sané. Captured by the British Navy on 4 September 1782, the ship became the model for the British “Leda class” frigates. These ships were armed with 26 long 18-pounder guns (later increased to 28), 12 long 8-pounder guns and 4 36-pounder obusiers, and had a designated crew of 300.

HMS Sybille was originally the 38-gun frigate “Sybille” of the French Navy, launched in 1791 in Toulon. She was captured by the 50-guns HMS Romney in 1794, and commissioned into service in the Royal Navy, where it served until 1833. HMS Sybille participated in several notable ship actions, capturing two French frigates and several privateers and brigs; and she participated in the Battle of Copenhagen, where it bombarded the city. After the Napoleonic Wars, on anti-slavery duties off West Africa from 1827 to 1830, Sybille captured numerous slavers and freed some 3,500 slaves. This ship pack can also be used to represent the British frigate “HMS Amelia 1796”.

The Proserpine was a 38-gun Hébé-class frigate of the French Navy launched in 1785. She was captured by HMS Dryad on 13 June 1796, after a 45 minute action 12 leagues off Cape Clear Island. The match was even, but the Proserpine made the fatal error of attempting escape, and she was finally forced to surrender with serious losses. She was commissioned by the British Admiralty into the Royal Navy, becoming the fifth rate “HMS Amelia”. This ship pack can also be used to represent the French frigate “Dryade 1783”.
